6 Hacks for Your Next Move

Packing all of your belongings only to unpack them a few days later is a daunting task that no one looks forwards to. However, there are a few tricks that will make moving a little bit easier, read on!
Moving Hack #1: Label all of your boxes- While you don’t really see the benefit when packing your things, this simple extra step can make a world of difference when it comes to unpacking them. Label your boxes with the room that their contents belong in, assuring that when you or your movers are carrying them into your new home, they get placed exactly where they need to be. Be sure to label the boxes on their sides rather than on the top so that you can still read them when they are stacked on top of one another.
Moving Hack #2: Wrap clothing on hangers with garbage bags- Although this hack may sound a little unsettling at first, it will save you countless hours and space. While your clothes are still hanging on your closet rack, cover them from the bottom up with large trash bags and tie them around the hanger hooks. You should be able to fit 15-20 hangers in a single garbage bag. The best part is that when you arrive in your new home, all you have to do is rehang the hangers with the clothes still on them and slide the garbage bag right off. Just make sure that you use study garbage bags that wont rip and you’ll be amazed at how practical this tip is!
Moving Hack #3: Pack your basics in a small bag- Chances are that you won’t be able to unpack everything in one day, so it’s always a good idea to have your necessary personal belongings in a separate bag. These items include your toiletries, medications, pajamas, clothes for a few days, and anything else that you use on a regular basis. Also, be sure to include your most valuable possessions such as your jewelry, passport, family heirlooms, etc.… Never lose track of this bag; it’s even a good idea to take it yourself if you are using movers.
Moving Hack #4: Put the heaviest items in suitcases- Whether you have decent book collection, several cast iron skillets, or decorations with significant weight, use suitcases to transport them to your new home. The handles and wheels will make it a lot easier to carry heavy loads, an otherwise difficult and dreadful process. It’s a smart way to take care of your back and will help prevent strains. Even if you are using movers, this packing trick will make their job much smoother and save them time.
Moving Hack #5: Wrap dishware in your t-shirts- In order to prevent your dishes from breaking, wrap them with your t-shirts. Not only will you save money otherwise spent buying bubble wrap, you will also be able to pack two things at once, saving you time and space. Make sure that each shirt or sweater that you use covers the dish entirely, then stacking them on top of each other. When your box is full, roll up some more t-shirts and put them in the remaining cavities to ensure that the dishes don’t move around when the boxes are being carried.
Moving Hack #6: Keep a general inventory of your belongings- When you move a lot of things at once, it can be easy to forget or misplace some of them. For this reason, keep a running list of your possessions as you pack them so that you can have an idea of what you expect to unpack when you reach your new home. This is especially helpful if you’re using a moving company and even more so if you’re moving to a new city and won’t have access to your belongings for a couple of days. Documenting your things with pictures, such as furniture or items of décor, is a good idea in case something breaks during the move.
