A Guide Through Miami Beach's Iconic Architecture

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

In 1926, there was a devastating hurricane in the South Florida area, and from this disaster, Art Deco in Miami Beach arose. At the time, Art Deco was a new design theory that was imported from Paris and quickly started appearing in the shores of the South as developers and architects hurried to rebuild this part of the beach that was taken away by the disaster.

Presently, over 800 Art Deco structures remain, which provide a festive backdrop to Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue, giving the beach a pastel dreamy look. Other than the hotels, there are also theaters, restaurants and shopping districts that offer more of the Art Deco theme. You can even see that the lifeguard huts on the beach are that of the geometric designs of the 1930s and 1940s. As Miami Beach continues to evolve and change, Art Deco architecture remains an important part of the Miami Beach experience.

Some of the hotels on the beach have become the most recognizable Art Deco buildings in the city, such as Delano, which is white winged and stands on 16th Street and Collins Avenue. This hotel was designed by Robert Swartburg and it features a very angular design, true to the Art Deco style.

On Ocean Drive, the Clevelander is a great choice for drinks, great food, and pool fun. This place includes lounges, a sun deck, a sports bar and is situated right in front of the beach, occupying a unique space since 1938.

In the famous Lincoln Road, you can find an Art Deco treasure in the Colony Theater, an entertainment venue that opened in 1935 and is part of Paramount Pictures' theater chain. The theater has a classic marquee, a vintage ticket office, and terrazzo flooring.

These and more iconic Art Deco architecture structures are sprinkled throughout Miami Beach, which perfectly suits the beautiful weather and sparkling ocean.
